Watching the FIFA 2010 World Cup abroad

Where to watch the FIFA 2010 World Cup if you are out of the country

Whether you're a footballing know-it-all like Motty or barely know your Becks from your Becks Vier you can hardly avoid the fact that the World Cup is almost here. Of course, the big question is where you’ll be watching the matches; after all where you cheer England on from is the most important thing.

For the truly dedicated, you'll probably already have your match tickets secured and safely stored under 24-hour armed guard, your flights to South Africa booked and you'll be penciled in to be ‘inked’ with that Three Lions tattoo on your backside . If you haven't sorted tickets, then the only Three Lions you're likely to be seeing out there in person will be on safari. So, with the ticket touts likely to give you more of a mauling than any lion ever could, where instead can you enjoy all the action and have a cheap holiday at a fraction of the cost?

Some of the best countries to visit for a bit of World Cup fever will of course be nations that have qualified for the finals. So, if you're feeling really brave and fancy testing just how special our 'special relationship' with America is then why not getaway on a holiday to Florida for that opener against the USA? Just don't go expecting any extra maple syrup on your pancakes the following day if England dish out a thrashing on the 12th, though if the result leaves you feeling as flat as a pancake then at least you'll have the hot sunshine and the chance of pulling Paris Hilton on Miami Beach to cheer you up.

Speaking of Paris, if you're thinking of heading abroad but need somewhere a lot closer to home then why not head to France to cheer on Fabio and the boys? Probably not a good idea if you have any Irish friends with you but if France get knocked out early then you'll be there in person to console Sporting Gentleman of the Year, Thierry Henry. Failing that, if you're simply looking to sample some very cheap beer and see a bit of Eastern Europe then Slovenia and Slovakia have both reached the finals but you'd be a brave man to be singing ‘World in Motion’ in a Slovenian bar the day they face England!

Alternatively, another option could be a short break to Rome to mix a footballing city-break with a touch of wonderful Italian culture... like a nice bottle of Peroni. And you'll certainly be in even better voice than the great Pavarotti if England make it all the way. Another short hop into Europe lands you in Amsterdam which is another great city to watch the big games in and see that wonderful bright sea of orange. But if you'd prefer a sea of vodka and orange, then a proper lads' break could be the perfect thing for you, where better than Portugal or Spain for a bit of sun, sea, sand and football.

The Costa Blanca won't cost a fortune so a holiday to Benidorm could be the perfect place to take in the amazing nightlife, relax on the beaches and join up with many of your fellow Brits for the tournament. With The Stretford End, London Bar and The Drop Inn amongst the many bars sure to be showing every kick of every game, where better to go (apart from the WAGs’ South African hotel pool) for that all important combination of football, beers and scantily clad women? To be honest, pretty much anywhere in Spain from Barcelona to the Balearics would be perfect with the Spanish likely to go all the way – the team, we mean.

Of course, if you want to be really patriotic then you may want to just stay at home in good old Blighty. With just about every pub jumping on the World Cup bandwagon there'll be no shortage of places to watch the game, from sharing a bit of banter with the Aussies in the Walkabout to the big screen experience that cities like Manchester and Liverpool are likely to offer. Remember too that you may also have the chance to swap your sunglasses for 3D glasses this summer, and what could be a more beautiful sight than seeing Rooney up close in 3D holding the World Cup aloft... well, maybe not Wazza for beauty but you get the point.

Whatever you decide, a cheap holiday abroad sure beats sitting at home and putting your size nines through the screen of your brand new LCD HD TV when England crash out on penalties in the Quarter-Finals yet again!

Come on England!
