Free State Stadium

Having hosted rugby and football matches since it first opened in 1952 this venue already has an impressive history. It was rebuilt for the 1995 Rugby World Cup and received further tweaks ahead of this year’s Confederations Cup.

It’s now a 48,000-seater stadium with electronic scoreboards, a new sound system and a VIP area with room for 650 free loaders, or football dignitaries as they’re also known. Home to some of the country’s most fanatical football fans, the city is already buzzing.

Claim to fame

More than 35,000 watched the USA beat Spain 2-0 in the Confederations Cup here in June. So the European champions might want to avoid a return to Bloemfontein
next summer, then.
