Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

The first of South Africa’s five new stadiums to begin construction, and the first to be finished in June 2009, Nelson Mandela’s very own stadium has already hosted a rugby match between the Lions and Southern Kings, the Soweto derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs and an international friendly between Bafana Bafana and Japan.

The stadium’s unique roof structure is said to have been specially designed with the notoriously strong local winds in mind - they look like sails you see, and seem to cover quite a bit of the pitch.

That’s our own technical observation, obviously.

Claim to fame

Last month the stadium hosted the Miss World 2009 sports event – a test of the glamorous ladies’ push-up, sit-up and jumping jack skills - the winner gets fast tracked
to the Miss World semi finals.
